1. Who am I to write a book on health?

I am not a medical doctor or any other type of licensed health
professional. I'm just someone who discovered a great low-cost way to improve
and maintain my health and told others, discovered they had lots of
questions and wrote a book to help them.

My book doesn't change any of Stanley Burroughs' Master Cleanse. It
just adds what to expect, which days are the worst, what detox symptoms
are, what to do about them, actual people's experiences day by day as
they did the cleanse, and answers to the 70 most frequently asked
questions with an alphabetical table of contents so you can find the answers
when you want without having to read the entire book. (You can purchase
it from the web store at
https://therawfoodsite.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=40 or
by calling 727-688-1709--the toll-free number is giving problems and
being worked on, sorry.)

Please keep in mind that the Master Cleanse by itself is only one third
of vibrant good health. Eating a predominantly raw vegan diet with lots
of fresh green vegetables or juice is the second part; and eliminating
stress is the final part.

"For every inch you gain in girth, the body grows approximately four
miles of blood vessels to nourish the extra tissues. Blood which would
normally be sent to the head and brain remains in the abdominal cavity,
aiding the digestive organs with their increased work load."

Dr. Stephen Chang, "Complete System of Self Healing Internal Exercises"

<>=================<@>=================<>

2. What about prescription drugs, including birth control pills, and
the Master Cleanse?

I routinely see so many questions on the Bulletin Board on this topic
that I feel obligated to repeat the answer here in this newsletter.

Don't discontinue any medicines prescribed by licensed healthcare
practitioners without consulting them or another licensed healthcare
practitioner. In "The Master Cleanser," Stanley Burroughs says not to take
"supplements", "vitamins and minerals" on the Master Cleanse. Nowhere does
he say discontinue all medications on the Master Cleanse. What he does
say is that when your health is good, you won't need medical care,
dangerous drugs, or medicine.

Non-prescribed supplements or over-the-counter medications that you
have chosen to take should be discontinued during the Master Cleanse.
However, you have to use some judgment here as well. If you develop a
migraine headache so strong that you cannot see, must drive to work, and
normally take an over-the-counter medicine to handle it; taking it will
not destroy all the benefits you can obtain from the Master Cleanse.
Would it be better if you took nothing? Absolutely. However, the chances
are excellent you will still benefit even if you do take it.

Keep in mind, the Master Cleanse is not something you do only once. You
don't get a report card. Maintaining health is a life-long process.
You'll have another chance to do it later. Each time, you can remove more
and more toxins. It is more important that you gain some benefits from
doing it than that you try to be perfect, quit and gain no benefit.

3. Smoothie Recipes

For those with a Vita-Mix, put in the ingredients below and blend for
15 or 20 seconds.

Ingredients:
2 handfuls of spinach, mixed greens, kale or turnip greens (Yes, yes,
yes, I know you don't want to eat any of those. Me, too, but in the
green smoothie with all the other stuff, you won't even taste them)
2 ripe mangoes without the skin or pit (or 2 peaches, a cup of
blueberries, strawberries, pitted cherries, or an additional banana)
1 banana
2 cups of refrigerated spring or distilled water

For those with regular blenders and concerned about their protein in
the morning or wondering what to have instead of eggs to start their day,
this smoothie is wonderful.

Ingredients: Soaked flax seeds, Banana, Fresh or frozen fruit and water
(dates and grated orange rind optional)

1. Place 1-2 heaping tablespoons of soaked Flax Seeds* in your blender.
2. Add 1-2 cups of water.
3. Turn on high speed until the seeds turn thick and goopy. Add more
water if needed.
4. Add one peeled banana.
5. Add frozen or fresh fruit. If you didn't add frozen fruit and want
it chilled, add ice cubes.
6. If you want it sweeter, add 4 - 6 soaked dates without the pits.
7. If you want a nice orange tang, add a bit of grated orange rind.
8. Mix and match any fruits you like:
Strawberries and bananas;
Peaches, strawberries and bananas; or
Peaches, pineapples, bananas and coconut

* I keep a container of soaking flax seeds in the refrigerator just
like other people keep milk or eggs on hand. I also keep a small dish of
soaking dates in water to use as a sweetener.

"Let food be thy medicine, and let thy medicine be food."

Hippocrates, 460 - 377 BC, Father of Western Medicine, who believed in
the natural healing process of rest, a good diet, fresh air and
cleanliness and that the body must be treated as a whole and not as a
collection of parts.

<>=================<@>=================<>

4. Are there any bad side effects of the Master Cleanse and how often
can I do it?

Some people's teeth become sensitive while on the cleanse and in one or
two cases for some days afterward. This seems to occur on any single
10-day Master Cleanse. As for doing the Master Cleanse too often,
temporary hair loss has been reported to me 5 times out of about 1250 people
doing the Master Cleanse (0.4%). In every case it occurred when the
person did more than one Master Cleanse within a three-month time span. No
one has reported hair loss as a result of a single cleanse no matter
how long that cleanse lasted. In every case I've followed up, the hair
grew back. Those are all the negative side effects I'm aware of.

I believe it's because the body needs to neutralize the acidic toxins
that are being released and the body uses its alkaline mineral reserves
to do this. Alkaline minerals in the body include calcium (primarily),
potassium, sodium and magnesium. Therefore, it is important to build up
these reserves between Master Cleanses. Fresh vegetables and vegetable
juices, primarily greens, I believe, are the best way to do this as the
body does not use inorganic minerals (ground up rocks).

Burroughs says doing the Master Cleanse three or four times a year will
do wonders for a person. This was based on the general state of
nutrition and diet 30 - 50 years ago, which was better than the average diet
now. This is also why he and I stress a primarily raw vegan diet the
rest of the year--it alkalizes the body.

emptiness of mind. Fasting brings mental clarity and removes mental and
physical obstructions. Letting go of all thoughts reveals man's true

1. The 100-mile Diet

"The 100-Mile Diet is the brainchild of Vancouver writer Alisa Smith
and her partner, former Adbusters editor J.B. MacKinnon. After learning
that the ingredients in the average North American meal travel between
1,500 and 2,500 miles from farm to plate - as much as 25 percent farther
than they did two decades ago - the green-minded couple decided to make
some lifestyle changes. "We're the kind of people that ride our bikes
everywhere, so we wondered why we were going to all this effort when our
food was flying around the world."

"From March 2005 to March 2006, they ate and drank only products grown,
raised and produced within a 100-mile radius. They documented their
progress along the way, started a Web site to encourage others and are now
working on a book about their experience.

"The ecologically and socially responsible concept has already caught
on and it's growing faster than a patch of purslane. In Powell River, a
peninsula town in British Columbia, 250 people have signed up to follow
a 50-mile diet for five weeks. "Others have written in to say they have
100-mile lunches or dinner parties," Smith says. In the States,
chapters of "locavores" have sprung up all across the country. Other groups
have set up their own Eat Local challenges. In this area, a group blog
called PhillyFoodShed serves as a starting point for exploring local
resources."

"I've personally done this cleanse 4 other times in the last two years.
I try to cleanse every six months. I do not alter the syrup or recipe
in anyway. I have a medium frame, 5'5" and average about 124. I usually
cleanse when I inch up to the 128 mark. I then lose about 8-9 pounds on
the fast, and gain about 2 back in water weight. The rest stays off."

"Hi everyone,

"I'm excited to report that it's been over a week post cleanse, and
despite having not broken the cleanse properly (which I am not
recommending, though nothing bad really happened to me), and having eaten some
things not on my ideal list of healthy choices (though I did not totally
binge either), I seem to be keeping the 10 lbs off.

"So that's good news. I'm looking forward to doing MC2 in late
sept/Oct.

"Take care!"

4. Beyonce & Master Cleanse Misconceptions

A lot has been written and said in the last week or so about Beyoncé's
losing 20 pounds in 10 days on the Master Cleanse for her new movie
role in "Dreamgirls" where her character first appears on screen as 16
years old, then later as 36.

What is clearly true is that Beyoncé was at least 14.5 pounds lighter 2
weeks later for shooting the younger part. Beyond that, there have been
some misconceptions that I'd like to clarify.

Misconception #1: "Health experts claim that this diet sends each of
its followers in a hospital if they try it more than 10 days."
(Originally written in www.playfuls.com and then reprinted in
Chinadaily.

The truth: Literally thousands of people do the Master Cleanse for
anywhere between 10 and 40 days and feel better afterwards. I personally
have done it 15 times and 5 of those were for more than 10 days. I have
never been to the hospital since I started eating better (predominantly
raw vegetarian, but not completely) and doing regular Master Cleanses
(about 1 every 3 months). Many more experiences of other people can be
found in my book, Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days.

Misconception #2: "People would start to feel very lethargic and would
be unable to concentrate... They will probably end up in hospital,
especially people who try it for more than 10 days." (from the same
article)

The truth: I do it to have more energy and think more clearly. In an
informal survey in January 2005 of 141 people who had completed at least
one Master Cleanse, more than 3/4 had more energy and more than 90%
were happier!

Misconception #3: "The problem is not what's in the diet but what's
not. There are no fats, proteins, vitamins or minerals and the only
carbohydrate is in the form of sugar." (from the same article)

The truth: Most people know that citrus fruit (including lemons) are a
good source of vitamin C. What many people do not know is that lemon
juice is also a good source of potassium. However, that's beside the
point. The idea that people cannot exist without protein for 10 days may be
a dream of the meat industry, but it is not true. Fasting, as
recommended in the Bible, has been recognized by many doctors for hundreds of
years. The most current, visible American MD who is a major proponent of
fasting is Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of Eat to Live and Fasting and
Eating for Health. He has had numerous successes curing with diabetes, high
blood pressure, and heart disease. In Europe, there are many health
spas run by doctors that practice fasting for healing and rejuvenation.

Misconception #4: "The diet was presented for the first time by a Swiss
health company in 1985 and reached a high popularity very fast." (from
the same article)

The truth: The Master Cleanse was first developed by Stanley Burroughs
and later appeared as The Master Cleanser, first published in 1976.

Misconception #5: "The cleanse became popular again with the 2004
publication of Peter Glickman’s Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier
in Ten Days." The WebCalorie

The truth: I appreciate the publicity. (They never even called or
emailed. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered this.) However, the
Master Cleanse has consistently grown more popular due to the great word
of mouth from the hundreds of thousands of people who do it every year
and discover its benefits.

Misconception #6: "The lemonade (which you drink 6 to 8 glasses per
day) is made from 2 tablespoons of Grade A maple syrup, juice of ½ lemon,
1/10 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and 1 quart of spring water." ("Hot
Stuff" New York Daily News, August 17, 2006)

The truth: I appreciated the reporter, Jane Ridley, giving my website a
direct link from the article, but "1 quart" should read "8 ounces". I
don't know what would happen to a person if they drank 8 quarts of water
every day for 10 or more days, but I wouldn't want to be the one to
find out. "6 to 8" should read "6 to 12 glasses per day".(By the way,
Burroughs recommends Grade B organic maple syrup because it has more
minerals, but says any grade will work.)

Misconception #7: " 'I ate everything when it was over...the second I
looked at a donut, it came back! I gained back all the weight, even the
weight I didn't want to come back!' she says, laughing." ("Beyoncé:
'I'm in no rush to get married'" The Belfast Telegraph, August 25, 2006)

The truth: I believe weight gain is a result of accumulated toxins.
It's been shown that the body protects itself from toxins that are too
numerous for the liver to handle by putting them into fat cells. That's
why going on a raw vegan diet results in people losing weight. The liver
is finally able to handle some of these stored older toxins because it
doesn't need to handle as many from the raw vegan diet. That's also why
people who go back to eating the Standard American Diet (lots of
artificially flavored, colored and preserved food that has been heavily
processed and practically no fresh, raw greens, vegetables and fruits)
immediately regain any weight they lose on any diet, let alone the Master
Cleanse. The better your diet afterwards, the less weight you put back
on. The informal survey of 141 Master Cleansers mentioned earlier
discovered that the average woman completing the Master Cleanse lost about 12
pounds and regained about 6. The average man lost about 16 pounds
and also regained about 6. Interestingly, most people reported they ate
a healthier diet after completing the cleanse.

Misconception #8: The Master Cleanse is for everyone.

The truth: The Master Cleanse is great, but it's not for everyone. It
is probably the second most powerful (read that as the fastest) way to
detoxify the body. Only a water fast is more powerful. If a person has a
great deal of stored toxins, releasing them too quickly results in
detox symptoms, such as headaches, rashes, tiredness, irritability, even
vomiting. Those people should not do the Master Cleanse. They should
detoxify much more slowly with a better diet. Also, people recovering from
surgery need large amounts of protein to regenerate tissue and so
should not do the Master Cleanse until they have completely recovered from
surgery. Pregnant and nursing women should not do it either, as there is
a remote possibility that the toxins may find their way into the
infant, although, I have never heard of such actually occurring, but better
safe than sorry. For the rest of us, the Master Cleanse is really
amazing!
